My Uncle, Oliver Hazard Perry, was born on this day in 1891(June 19), so today is the 134th anniversary of his birth. He was one of my Dad's younger brothers, along with Basil. He served in World War One and never married. He died in the New Haven, CT, Veterans Hospital in 1958. Dad tried but failed to get him in Bristol VA Home, but it was not approved as he had enlisted in Connecticut when the family lived in West Haven. He is buried in the Perry Plot of Juniper Hill Cemetery in Bristol with parents and siblings, except Andrew and Basil. Attached are some pictures and memories of Uncle Oliver.

The 1953 Perry Centennial in Newport, commemorating Commodore Matthew Perry’s expedition to Japan, might have been one of Uncle Oliver's last trips to Bristol. I saw him once or twice before he died at the Veterans home in New Haven. It was extremely memorable for a teenage boy to see dying men in the hospital. Uncle Oliver had one leg amputated because of clots but smiled and squeezed my hand in recognition.
Bob Barrett recalls seeing Uncle Oliver once only, “around Christmas day I believe, 1955. When Emily introduced us he was sitting on the side of a bed in a small room upstairs where Aunt Mary lived at the time. At least that's how I recall it. I don't remember ever seeing him again after that. In fact, I don't recall his being at dinner so perhaps it was not Christmas day but some other day during Christmas break.”

Unfortunately, I know little about my uncle Oliver as he did not visit our Bristol family frequently. I do know he had a serious problem with alcohol which might have been a reason for his absence. My dad believed he started drinking during the War and had problems controlling his addiction. He lived in boarding houses in the mid-Atlantic areas and to my knowledge never owned a home or developed a profession after his Army enlistment.
Uncle Oliver was very proud of his name and wanted me to have interest and pride in my name. He gave me several books on Commodore Perry and Japan when I was young, which did stimulate my interest in this foreign country where my ancestor had visited.
Commodore MCP named a son Oliver Hazard Perry, and he served as Comm Perry’s clerk during the Japan Expedition. Commodore OHP named two sons Oliver Hazard Perry, the first dying at the age of one year old. Oliver Hazard Perry, Jr., (1815-1878) was married twice, had children with both wives, and named a son, Oliver Hazard Perry, with his second wife. Commodore O. H. Perry's first son, Christopher Grant Perry, had a son named O.H. Perry, but he died unmarried. Now there are no direct descendants of Commodore O. H. Perry or Commodore M. C. Perry who have the Perry surname. I am lucky to have a son named Oliver Hazard Perry and his brother, Christoper and his wife Elizabeth, named one of their sons Oliver Hazard Perry. The name lives on!!!
