24)草の根サミット後の子孫たちの集い
Following the very successful Grassroots Summit in Wakayama Prefecture in July, descendants of John Manjiro, Captain Whitfield, and Commodore Perry, traveled to Nagoya to the home of Ms. Kyo Nakahama, where they received a welcome house and grounds tour and a very generous and delicious lunch. The main purpose of the visit, coordinated by Mr. Hayato Sakurai, a Manjiro scholar, was to view the collection of papers and artifacts dealing with Manjiro. These valuable documents have been assembled in a special area of Kyo’s home where they can be collated and studied in detail. Although this project has been planned for many years, it has received increased attention due to the planned celebration in Japan of the 200th anniversary of Manjiro’s birth in 2027.
2024年7月、和歌山県で大成功を収めた日米草の根交流サミットの後、私は、ホイットフィールド船長の子孫とともに、名古屋にあるジョン万次郞子孫・中浜京さんの自宅を訪れる機会を得ました。そこでは、おおいに歓迎していただき、敷地内を見学した後に、豪華でおいしい昼食をいただきました。訪問をコーディネートしてくださったのは万次郎研究家の櫻井敬人さんで、その主な目的は万次郎に関する文書や遺品を視察することでした。これらの貴重な資料は京さんの自宅の特別な場所に納められており、そこで照合して詳細を研究することができます。調査プロジェクトは長年計画されてきましたが、2027年は万次郎生誕200周年にあたることから、さらに注目を集めています。

Attending the get-together at Kyo’s house, were Manjiro descendants (Kei, Kyo, Aya, and Tomoyasu), Whitfield descendants (Scott and Wyatt), and a Perry descendant (Matthew). Also attending was a friend of Wyatt’s, Kaitlin Cossentino, and Ms. Mikiko Kumagai, Director Manjiro Curatorial Research Group. The descendants viewed the bible that Manjiro owned while living in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, with Captain Whitfield, along with other artifacts including photographs, maps, and drawings Manjiro made. This first gathering at Kyo’s house was documented by a newspaper reporter and camera crew from Chunichi and Kochi Newspapers. On the following day the descendants were welcomed at Toho High School by Mr. Yasunori Ito, where they gave lectures and answered many thought-provoking questions from the students. Overall, the Nagoya visit by descendants was educational for all, and provided furtherance of the cultural exchange goal of the Center for International Exchange of developing new friendships.
京さんの家での集まりには、万次郎の子孫（圭さん、京さん、文さん、知靖さん）、ホイットフィールドの子孫（スコットさん、ワイアットさん）、そしてペリーの子孫（私、マシュー・ペリー）に加え、ワイアット氏友人ケイトリン・コッセンティーノさんと、万次郎資料調査団・団長の熊谷幹子さんも同席しました。私たちは、万次郎がマサチューセッツ州フェアヘイブンでホイットフィールド船長と暮らしていた頃に所有していた聖書や、写真、地図、万次郞が描いた絵などの展示品を見学しました。京さん宅でのこの会合は、中日新聞と高知新聞の記者とカメラクルーによって記録されました。翌日、私たち子孫らは、東邦高校を訪問しました。そこでは、伊藤保憲先生の歓迎を受けて講演を行い、生徒たちからの多くの刺激的な質問に答えました。全体として、私たちの名古屋訪問は、すべての人にとって学びの多いものとなり、新たな友情を育むという国際草の根交流センターの目的を促進するものとなりました。
